Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the execution of Chijioke Stephen Obioha by the Singaporean government.
Chijioke was put to the death in the early hours of Friday, November 18 after a last-minute call for clemency was denied.
Obioha was found in possession of 2,604.56g of cannabis, surpassing the statutory amount of 500 grams that under Singapore law triggers the automatic presumption of trafficking in 2007.
Following his execution, some Nigerians blamed the government for the hardship in the country that had led people to engage in crime.
Others however faulted the deceased for committing a crime that is punishable by death in a country that has one of the strictest laws.
Read the reactions below:
Richard Osang: “The result of misplaced priority. Our leadership have failed to plan adequately, work hard and lack the integrity to do the right thing, otherwise how can a graduate of industrial chemistry waste his life in search of a football club and ended up this way. May his soul rest in peace”
Thompson Onyekweluwa wrote: “Ride on bros,no one is perfect. This world is not our home we are but strangers here, we are passing through. He may has died as a righteous man. Let the living souls think about their days of departure. Brother You have gone forever, let God consoles your family. Rest in Peace.”
Nnamdi Benjamin wrote: “See How President Buhari abandoned a citizen of his country when he could have interceded or do criminal swap. The man does not care. This would not have happened in Biafraland”
Joseph Annor “Well all we know in dis country is blood , hardship and unforgiveness…the government wont say anything. They are even happy about dia death and we masses bcos we are broke and oppress we support the govt”
Simon Ishaku: “After 8yrs of jail term i think is enough for the crime he committed why death sentence again? Rip”
Moses E. Hanney “We don’t have government, those guys doesn’t like black people especially Nigerians so they do all it takes to set u up n execute u.”
Olanrewaju Adekunle wrote: “RIP. Let our government create jobs for graduate for that matter shame to Nigerian government.”
Gideon Nnba John wrote: “Look at what our leader caused for the young Nigerian. Why this country and our leader wants to kill all our young men. God will judge them.”
Meanwhile, senior special assistant to President Buhari on foreign affairs and diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described it as heartbreaking.
In a statement by her special assistant on media, Abdur-Rahman Balogun in Abuja, she said it was obvious that Singapore is determined to enforce its laws as a deterrent to drug trafficking, nothing much can be achieved with repeated appeals.
She said: “While we regret the death sentence passed on the Nigerian, we once again appeal to Nigerians to avoid crimes like drug trafficking with most countries especially in Asia declaring zero tolerance for drug trafficking.”
